The pros and cons of choosing a commercial platform or rolling your own
Two paths to a companion
Once you have decided you want an AI companion, there is a fork in the road most guides skip: do you buy one, or build one? For the vast majority of people, buying, that is, picking a commercial app or website, is the right answer. But a growing number of technically inclined people are choosing to build their own, and the tools have gotten good enough that it is a real option worth understanding.

The case for buying
Buying means using one of the many commercial platforms. It is the path most people should take, and for good reasons.

- +Rich features out of the box. Voice, calls, images, and memory systems come already built and integrated.
What it costs you
- –Recurring cost. Most charge a monthly subscription, and the best features usually sit behind the paywall.
- –Less control. You live within the platform’s rules, content filters, and persona limits.
- –Privacy trade-offs. Your conversations live on someone else’s servers, and billing can tie them to your identity unless the platform is careful.
- –Platform risk. Services change their rules, raise prices, or shut down, and your companion goes with them.

The case for building your own
Building your own means running the companion yourself instead of renting one. Thanks to capable open-weight models and a maturing set of agent-builder tools, this is far more achievable than it was even a year ago.
The building blocks typically include an open model family such as Nous Research’s Hermes, which is tuned for steerable, persona-friendly, and largely uncensored conversation; a way to run it, either locally through tools like LM Studio or Ollama on capable hardware, or through a hosted inference provider; and a front-end and persona layer, such as character cards, memory add-ons, and a chat interface, that gives your companion a consistent personality and long-term recall.
Why build your own
- +Total control. You define the persona, the boundaries, and the behavior, with no content filters imposed by a vendor.
- +Privacy by default. Run it locally and your conversations never leave your machine; there is no subscription tying the data to your identity.
- +No recurring platform fee beyond hardware and electricity (or metered inference), and no risk of a service changing the rules or shutting down.
- +Deep extensibility. Memory systems, tools, voices, and images can all be wired in to taste.
What it costs you
- –Real setup effort and a learning curve. This is a project, not a download.
- –You are the maintainer. Updates, breakage, and tuning are on you.
- –Matching the polish of commercial apps, especially high-end image and video generation and slick mobile UX, is hard to do yourself.
- –Good local performance needs decent hardware (a capable GPU or Apple Silicon), or you pay for hosted inference.
So, which is right for you?
Buy if you want a companion that just works, value polish and convenience, and do not want a technical project. That is most people, and there is nothing wrong with it.
Build if you are privacy-focused, comfortable with technical setup, and want control, over the persona, the boundaries, and where your data lives, that no subscription can offer.
And remember the two are not mutually exclusive: many people start by buying to learn what they like, then build their own once they know exactly what they want.
